Centerline Action Encouraged by RNC Platform Change on Freedom to Marry

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | July 11, 2024

Washington, D.C – Following the adoption of the 2024 Republican Party platform, Centerline Action Board President, James Dozier, issued the following statement:

“The Republican Party was founded on the principle of freedom, and Centerline Action is pleased to see the party formally remove its opposition to the freedom to marry in the 2024 Party Platform. This is not just smart policy, it is smart politics. Over the course of the past twenty years, America has experienced a historic shift in support for the freedom to marry across all demographic groups. This shift reflects the continued growing public support for a more just and inclusive society focused on building stronger families and a brighter future for all Americans,” said James Dozier, Centerline Action Board President

New national polling data and historic analysis conducted by Republican research firm Redbud Consulting found broad and robust support for marriage equality. Highlights include:

  • Support Remains Incredibly Strong Overall, Across Many Groups: Support for legal same-sex marriage continues to be both broad and deep. By sweeping margins, Americans of all stripes support same-sex marriage, the Respect for Marriage Act, or the Obergefell ruling.
  • A strong bipartisan majority (66%) agrees that “Same-sex couples should have the right to marry one another,” continuing the 20-year trend in growing support as measured by both Gallup and the General Social Survey
  • More than half (61%) of Americans – including 56% of Republicans – believe that someone who supports same-sex marriage can be considered a good Republican.
  • Republicans are more positive than negative on same-sex marriage: Republicans are net positive on the issue, and age/generational patterns show support that will only grow as the electorate ages.
    • 50% of Republicans agree that “Same-sex couples should have the right to marry one another” while 44% disagree.
    • 62% of Republican Gen Z voters support marriage between same-sex couples.

A recent landmark report commissioned by Centerline Liberties and conducted by RAND found widespread societal benefits of marriage equality. Highlights of the report include:

  • Among the positive effects of the freedom to marry for sames-ex couples include increased adoption rates, increased mortgage applications, savings to the nation’s health care system and enhanced public safety and health.
  • Legal recognition of the freedom to marry has had many positive and zero adverse effects on same-sex couples and individuals, their children, and the general population.
  • Legalizing marriage for same-sex couples did not result in different-sex couples retreating from marriage or cohabitation.
