Washington, DC: Former Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who serves as the head of Conservatives Against Discrimination, and James Dozier, the Board Chair of Centerline Action, today released the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the Respect for Marriage Act being signed into law.
“One year ago, the federal government took a critical step to protect every American’s freedom to marry the person they love. The Respect for Marriage Act brought peace of mind to millions of LGBTQ couples and families, who today celebrate one year of being guaranteed the rights and protections to which they and their children are entitled. We wish to once again thank the dedicated, bipartisan congressional champions of this legislation, most notably Senators Tammy Baldwin, Susan Collins, Rob Portman, Kyrsten Sinema, Thom Tillis, and the late Senator Diane Feinstein, who negotiated in good faith and brought this bill over the finish line. Together, they showed that it’s possible for Republicans and Democrats to come together to safeguard our most fundamental rights. Finally, let us use this occasion to renew our commitment to creating a nation where every individual is treated with dignity, regardless of who they love. Let us stand united in our pursuit of a more just and equal society, recognizing that diversity is our strength and that love, in all its forms, is worth celebrating.”
